Star Trek<\/em><\/a>\u00a0producers revealed Saturday that Patrick Stewart will reprise the role of\u00a0Star Trek: The Next Generation<\/em>\u00a0captain Jean-Luc Picard on the franchise\u2019s new series.<\/p>\n

The actor is also set to serve as executive producer on the series, which will air \u2013\u00a0like\u00a0Star Trek Discovery<\/em><\/a>\u00a0\u2013 on CBS\u2019 video-on-demand service All Access beginning in the fall of 2019.<\/p>\n

Stewart portrayed the fan-beloved Picard during\u00a0Star Trek: The Next Generation<\/em>\u2018s original television run from 1987 to 1994; the series\u2019 crew also starred in four feature films, with Picard last appearing in 2002\u2019s\u00a0Star Trek: Nemesis<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI will always be very proud to have been a part of\u00a0Star Trek: The Next Generation<\/em>, but when we wrapped that final movie in the spring of 2002, I truly felt my time with\u00a0Star Trek<\/em>\u00a0had run its natural course,\u201d Stewart said in\u00a0a statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is, therefore, an unexpected but delightful surprise to find myself excited and invigorated to be returning to Jean-Luc Picard and to explore new dimensions within him. Seeking out new life for him, when I thought that life was over. During these past years, it has been humbling to hear many stories about how\u00a0The Next Generation<\/em>\u00a0brought people comfort, saw them through difficult periods in their lives or how the example of Jean-Luc inspired so many to follow in his footsteps, pursuing science, exploration and leadership.\u00a0I feel I\u2019m ready to return to him for the same reason \u2014 to research and experience what comforting and reforming light he might shine on these often very dark times. I look forward to working with our brilliant creative team as we endeavor to bring a fresh, unexpected and pertinent story to life once more.\u201d<\/p>\n

The series\u2019 producer Alex Kurtzman added in a statement (via\u00a0The Hollywood Reporter<\/em><\/a>), \u201cWith overwhelming joy, it\u2019s a privilege to welcome Sir Patrick Stewart back to the\u00a0Star Trek<\/em>\u00a0fold. For over 20 years, fans have hoped for the return of Captain Jean-Luc Picard and that day is finally here. We can\u2019t wait to forge new ground, surprise people, and honor generations both new and old.\u201d<\/p>\n

Star Trek: The Next Generation<\/em>\u00a0was previously named one of\u00a0Rolling Stone<\/em>\u2018s\u00a040 Best Science Fiction TV Shows of All Time<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0one of the 20 Best TV Spin-Offs<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Stewart was also on hand at a\u00a0Star Trek<\/em>\u00a0fan convention in Las Vegas to surprise attendees with the announcement:<\/p>\n
