But the Queen was also one of history\u2019s most audacious Beatle fans. Nobody ever sang\u00a0<a id=\"auto-tag_the-beatles\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/the-beatles\/\" data-tag=\"the-beatles\">the Beatles<\/a>\u00a0like Aretha. Since she was one of the few Sixties musicians as famous and revered as they were, she felt free to take any approach she pleased to a Fabs song \u2014 sometimes radically reworking it, as when she sang \u201cEleanor Rigby\u201d in the first person. When Aretha sang any song, even a Beatle song, she claimed it as her own \u2014 and the Beatles knew it. Nothing could make them prouder than getting one of their songs stolen by the Queen. When Paul McCartney wrote \u201cLet It Be,\u201d he sent an acetate demo to Aretha in hopes she\u2019d record it, knowing full well she\u2019d outsing him on it. (Needless to say, she did.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The Beatles\u2019 music was always steeped in American R&amp;B \u2014 as kids in Liverpool, they heard a sophistication and urgency in American music that inspired everything they did. From their earliest days, they played songs by Ray Charles, Smokey Robinson, the Shirelles, Little Willie John, the Marvelettes\u2014always aspiring to live up to the spirit-in-the-dark soul of the original. They were already stars when Aretha became an overnight sensation in 1967, with her album\u00a0<i>I Never Loved a Man (The Way I Love You)<\/i>. She sang their songs with the irreverent bravado they brought to their American R&amp;B covers\u2014instead of just trying to copy the original, she took it somewhere new.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">As Paul McCartney said in his statement on her death, \u201cLet\u2019s all take a moment to give thanks for the beautiful life of Aretha Franklin, the Queen of our souls, who inspired us all for many many years.\u201d Like anyone else who loved music, the Beatles worshipped Aretha for her fearless spirit. And whenever she sang a Beatles song, she summed up the best in their music as well as hers.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>\u201cThe Long and Winding Road\u201d (1972)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Aretha Franklin The Long And Winding Road\" width=\"1170\" height=\"878\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/e-ExwR4Buks?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Simply put, this is the greatest of all Beatle covers \u2014 the one that improves most on the original and defines everything the song is about. You just haven\u2019t heard \u201cThe Long and Winding Road\u201d until you hear Aretha burn it up in her version from\u00a0<i>Young, Gifted and Black<\/i>. The Beatles\u2019 original got botched in the studio, buried under Phil Spector\u2019s maudlin strings and that god-awful vocal choir. It took Aretha to bring out the loneliness and pain in this song\u2014she adds the gospel grit that the original was striving for, with a little help from Beatle pal Billy Preston on the organ. But she hears an even sadder story in the song than Paul McCartney did. She ends it by chanting the lines \u201cMany times I\u2019ve been alone and many times I\u2019ve cried\u201d\u2014she refuses to even hint at a happy ending. Aretha never finds out if she\u2019s ever going to get through that door, and neither do we. One of the Queen\u2019s most brilliant and heartbreaking performances.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>\u201cEleanor Rigby\u201d (1969)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=fb_GM-ONgLo<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Aretha claims her place in the story by switching it to the first person, singing, \u201cI\u2019m Eleanor Rigby \/ I pick up the rice in the church where the weddings have been, yeah.\u201d It\u2019s a boldly in-your-face reinvention of the song, with the Muscle Shoals house band revving up the R&amp;B tempo as she wails, \u201cAll over the world, the lonely lonely lonely people\u2014where do they all belong?\u201d Her single, which reached Number 17 on the Billboard Hot 100, feels a world away from the elegiac chamber music of the Beatles\u2019 version, but it\u2019s also a tribute to the original song\u2019s pathos and compassion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>\u201cLet It Be\u201d (1970)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Let It Be By Aretha Franklin\" width=\"1170\" height=\"658\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/rsYAnzAoa9c?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Aretha\u2019s \u201cLet It Be\u201d came out in January 1970\u2014two months before the Beatles released their version as a single. Paul McCartney sent a demo to Jerry Wexler at Atlantic Records in hopes she\u2019d record her own version of a song that could have been written for her. Aretha gives \u201cLet It Be\u201d a straight rendition, touching on the line about \u201cMother Mary\u201d\u2014like Paul, Aretha lost her mother as a child, and there\u2019s a bittersweet resonance in the way she evokes that memory. King Curtis adds a graceful sax solo.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cThe Fool on the Hill\u201d (1969\/2007)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Aretha Franklin - The Fool On The Hill (This Girl&#039;s In Love With You Outtake)\" width=\"1170\" height=\"878\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/zRnhGRLL9CI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Aretha demoed \u201cThe Fool on the Hill\u201d for her 1970 album\u00a0<i>This Girl\u2019s In Love With You<\/i>, but it never saw the light of day until it came out on the 2007 outtakes compilation,\u00a0<i>Rare and Unreleased Recordings from the Golden Reign of the Queen of Soul<\/i>. Aretha\u2019s version is just piano, guitar and tambourine, with a touch of bossa nova influenced by the hit version by Sergio Mendes &amp; Brasil \u201966. \u201cThe Fool on the Hill,\u201d like \u201cBlackbird,\u201d was a song Paul related to the struggles of the American civil rights movement\u2014in later years, when performing it live, he\u2019d include snippets of Martin Luther King\u2019s \u201cI Have a Dream\u201d speech. Aretha sings \u201cThe Fool on the Hill\u201d with a pensive tone of her own, as if she relates to the story of the solitary yogi on the hill.
