Apple\u2019s upcoming\u00a0September 12th\u00a0event is almost here, and as is tradition,\u00a0we\u2019re expecting to hear\u00a0about the latest versions of Apple\u2019s most important product: the iPhone, which is coming off of a radical redesign in the form of last year\u2019s iPhone X.<\/p>\n

But Apple is about more than just the iPhone, and the ecosystem of accessories and services that have sprung up around the iPhone have become hugely important in their own right, so expect plenty of news about the Apple Watch, AirPods, and maybe even the\u00a0long-absent AirPower charging pad. That\u2019s in addition to\u00a0all the new software announced at WWDC earlier this year, which should be getting close to a final release after a summer of beta testing.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s shaping up to be a wild day, and as always,\u00a0The Verge<\/em>\u00a0will be live on the scene to bring you all the latest news from Cupertino as soon as it happens. Until then, though, here\u2019s what to expect:<\/p>\n

NEW IPHONES<\/h3>\n

As always, the headliner at this year\u2019s event is going to be new iPhones. Apple is expected to announce three of them: first up is\u00a0the iPhone XS<\/a>, an updated version of last year\u2019s iPhone X, with the same notched, bezel-less, 5.8-inch screen, but with improved internal specs \u2014 the same as Apple\u2019s other -S class updates.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

But along with the XS, Apple is also expected to announce a larger, 6.5-inch version in the vein of its Plus models that offers a bigger screen and larger battery \u2014 although the bigger XS is reportedly\u00a0called the iPhone XS Max<\/a>, not the XS Plus.<\/p>\n

Neither of the new XS phones is expected to break too much from the mold that Apple set with the iPhone X \u2014 they\u2019ll both feature OLED displays, stainless steel frames, and the\u00a0often copied Face ID notch<\/a>, with most of the changes coming internally in the form of a new A12 processor and more RAM. (A new gold color is expected to join the existing black and white options, though). There is the chance that Apple will have some new, exclusive feature for the XS models, following the pattern of using -S devices to introduce new functionality like Touch ID, Siri, or 3D Touch.<\/p>\n

The last phone is more interesting \u2014\u00a0a cheaper, 6.1-inch LCD iPhone<\/a>\u00a0that would offer the bezel-less display and Face ID of the X and XS phones at a lower price point, replacing the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus as Apple\u2019s new \u201centry\u201d model. The 6.1-inch device \u2014 let\u2019s call it the iPhone 9 for now, although what Apple actually decided to name it hasn\u2019t leaked yet \u2014 would cut some of the X and XS phone\u2019s more premium features like the OLED screen, stainless steel frame,\u00a0and possibly even the 3D Touch system<\/a>\u00a0(introduced with much fanfare with the iPhone 6S, but since faded into obscurity).<\/p>\n

But while Apple offering a cheaper iPhone X-style device is interesting, it would also mark the end of an era for the company\u2019s phones, shifting away from the fingerprint-based Touch ID system for Face ID and bigger phones.<\/p>\n

APPLE WATCH SERIES 4<\/strong><\/p>\n

While the iPhone story this year seems to be a more iterative update, things are very different for the Apple Watch, which looks to be\u00a0getting its first major redesign since the original model<\/a>\u00a0was released back in 2015.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Leaked images of the Apple Watch Series 4<\/a>\u00a0show that Apple will be offering a bigger display on the watch for a nearly edge-to-edge design, along with what appears to be a slimmer size than the previous versions (although it seems that legacy bands will still be compatible).<\/p>\n

Apple is expected to be taking advantage of that larger display with new watchfaces, too, with the leaked image showing off more complications on the face than ever before. The Series 4 is also expected to offer an LTE model as well, similar to last year\u2019s Series 3, although with a more subtle red ring on the digital crown to denote the cellular status.<\/p>\n

The new Apple Watch will almost certainly come with\u00a0watchOS 5<\/a>\u00a0(announced at WWDC earlier this year<\/a>) which adds automatic workout detection, a walkie-talkie mode, and better notifications.<\/p>\n

AIRPOWER, AIRPODS, AND ACCESSORIES<\/strong><\/p>\n

This year\u2019s iPhone event will mark a full year since\u00a0Apple announced its AirPower charging pad<\/a>, which was shown to be able to wirelessly charge up to three devices at one time \u2014 perfect for keeping an iPhone, Apple Watch, and a pair of AirPods juiced up. The company has been totally mum on any updates since, so hopefully we\u2019ll get some news on pricing and a release date at this year\u2019s event.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Apple is also rumored to have a new version of its AirPods wireless headphones set for this year, featuring a new wireless chip, support for hands-free Siri activation,\u00a0and a case that would support wireless charging<\/a>\u00a0(to go along with the AirPower pad). There were also reports earlier this year that Apple was working on a non-Beats branded pair of\u00a0over-ear noise-canceling headphones<\/a>, although they may have since been delayed for next year.<\/p>\n

And on the more minor side of things, Apple is expected to finally replace the 5W USB charger that has come included with all of its phones with a more powerful 19W USB-C brick that can\u00a0fast-charge newer iPhones<\/a>, along with a USB-C to Lightning cable to go with it.<\/p>\n

IOS 12, MACOS MOJAVE, AND OTHER SOFTWARE UPDATES<\/strong><\/p>\n

While the big stars of the show are expected to be Apple\u2019s major hardware updates, we\u2019ll likely get some final release dates for iOS 12, watchOS 5, tvOS, and\u00a0maybe even macOS Mojave<\/a>\u00a0(although Apple may save its desktop software for later in the fall for a rumored Mac hardware event.)<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

We\u2019re not expecting too much to have changed with the software since WWDC \u2014 Apple has spent all summer tinkering and polishing things with a deluge of both developer and public betas, so we\u2019re mostly just looking to find out when the updates will be making their way to the masses.<\/p>\n

iOS 12, much like the new iPhones,\u00a0isn\u2019t looking to be a particularly flashy update<\/a>\u00a0in terms of features this year \u2014 instead focusing on fine-tuning performance, especially on older iPhones and iPads. But there are some new features: Screen Time, for tracking your time spent on your phone, better notifications (finally), and some fun new custom emoji called \u201cMemoji\u201d. Apple is also updating its augmented reality ARKit framework to the new ARKit 2, which offers the ability to create shared AR experiences.<\/p>\n

ONE MORE THING…?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Last minute surprises\u00a0are a big part of the Apple keynote brand<\/a>, which means that there\u2019s plenty of room for something unexpected to show up.<\/p>\n

Could Apple\u2019s\u00a0leaked bezel-less iPad Pro<\/a>\u00a0make an appearance? Will we finally see the return of\u00a0the long-neglected MacBook Air and Mac Mini<\/a>? A teaser for the\u00a0upcoming Apple streaming service<\/a>\u00a0that\u2019s been building up steam all year? Anything could happen when Tim Cook takes the stage.<\/p>\n
