This is particularly interesting \u2014 especially when taken in conjunction with the movie\u2019s 1990s setting \u2014 because Maria Rambeau\u2019s daughter in comic book lore is Monica Rambeau, a superhero and former Avenger who has gone by a number of names since her 1982 debut in\u00a0<em>Amazing Spider-Man Annual<\/em>\u00a0No. 16 inc&#8230;including, for a brief period, \u201cPhoton.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This is more than just an Easter egg teasing a connection to an existing Marvel character, a la 2015\u2019s\u00a0<em>Avengers: Age of Ultron<\/em>, however \u2014 that movie also featured the mother of a superhero, with Claudia Kim appearing as Helen Cho, who in comic book continuity is the mother of Amadeus Cho, also known as the gamma-powered Brawn. Monica Rambeau has a curious connection to Carol Danvers, in that Monica actually\u00a0<em>preceded<\/em>\u00a0her as Captain Marvel by a number of decades.<\/p>\n<p>Marvel has had a number of Captains Marvel throughout its history, although its first \u2014 the alien Mar-Vell, who debuted in 1967\u2019s\u00a0<em>Marvel Super-Heroes<\/em>\u00a0No. 12 \u2014 was actually the\u00a0<em>third<\/em>\u00a0comic book hero with that name, following a lengthy run from the character now known as Shazam, and a short-lived hero from independent publisher M.F. Enterprises.<\/p>\n<p>All told, Carol Danvers is the\u00a0<em>eighth<\/em>\u00a0Captain Marvel to be published by Marvel, despite her lengthy superheroing career \u2014 much of it spent under a variety of names, including Ms. Marvel, Warbird and Binary. By contrast, Monica Rambeau was Marvel\u2019s second Captain Marvel, and the publisher\u2019s first woman in the role.<\/p>\n<p>Monica Rambeau turned out to be an important character in Marvel\u2019s comic book history; one of Marvel\u2019s first black female superheroes, she was also one of its most high-profile characters during her five-year tenure with the Avengers, a group she\u2019d eventually lead. She was one of Marvel\u2019s first legacy characters \u2014 a hero assuming or inheriting another hero\u2019s costumed identity \u2014 and in many ways, a forerunner of Marvel\u2019s recent trend to add diversity to its white, male lineup through existing properties and concepts.<\/p>\n<p>That her mother is introduced in the retro setting of\u00a0<em>Captain Marvel<\/em>\u00a0means that, in theory, there\u2019s an adult Monica Rambeau existing right now in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, waiting for her origin story to become a superhero in her own right\u2026something that really shouldn\u2019t be overlooked considering that, almost 20 movies in, there\u2019s still no superpowered women heroes of color in the MCU yet. (No, Dora Milaje and Shuri from\u00a0<em>Black Panther<\/em>\u00a0don\u2019t count.) A potential, and necessary, addition to Marvel Studios\u2019 Phase 4?
