But the strength of the talent pool wasn&#8217;t why I assumed Biel would come up empty-handed for her haunted performance as accused murderer Cora Tannetti on\u00a0<em>The Sinner<\/em>. Instead, it was the fact that hers was the only nomination for a shrewd and surprising\u00a0<em>why<\/em>-dunit, one that subverted crime dramas by giving you the killer at the season&#8217;s outset.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">See,\u00a0<em>The Sinner<\/em>, the second season of which ends tonight and which Biel also executive-produces, belongs to a once-rare but ever-swelling genus of shows: the word-of-mouth sensation. If you&#8217;re lucky, you stumble on it\u2014or have it recommended to you\u2014early enough to catch up in time for its season finale. Think\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/wired.com\/story\/killing-eve-engineering-binge-watching\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Killing Eve<\/a><\/em>,\u00a0<em>Succession<\/em>.\u00a0<em>The Sinner<\/em>plumbed the same ground in 2017, emerging as the number one new cable series in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2017\/tv\/news\/jessica-biel-usa-series-the-sinner-ratings-1202527004\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8220;delayed viewing.&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0Then it picked up an even\u00a0<em>more<\/em>\u00a0delayed audience when it caught fire on Netflix earlier this year. Yet, similar to\u00a0<em>Killing Eve<\/em>, it\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/emmy-endorsement-killing-eve-drama\/\">didn&#8217;t pile up nominations<\/a>. There wasn&#8217;t one for its patient directing, nor its halting, revelatory writing, not for Bill Pullman&#8217;s chokingly understated portrayal of long-suffering detective Harry Ambrose. It deserved at least four\u2014and even its single nod turned out to be for naught.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">And once again, last night&#8217;s Emmys revealed that\u00a0<em>The Sinner<\/em>and\u00a0<em>Killing Eve<\/em>\u00a0are not alone. Trophy after trophy went to the most prestigious of prestige TV: Netflix&#8217;s Queen Elizabeth II bio-series\u00a0<em>The Crown<\/em>; FX&#8217;s Cold War domestic espionage cat-and-mouse\u00a0<em>The Americans<\/em>; Amazon&#8217;s upstart comedy\u00a0<em>The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel<\/em>; HBO&#8217;s &#8230; everything. No question, these were deserving shows and performances. Henry Winkler? Still a treasure, even if his Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series award for\u00a0<em>Barry<\/em>\u00a0came at the expense of\u00a0<em>Atlanta<\/em>&#8216;s far more deserving Brian Tyree Henry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Meanwhile, some of the television series I&#8217;ve had the most conversations about it\u2014the good kind, the morning-after-Slackathon kind, the &#8220;oh, you&#8217;ve gotta watch this&#8221; kind\u2014got overlooked.\u00a0<em>Big Mouth<\/em>\u00a0(one music nomination, zero awards).\u00a0<em>The Good Place<\/em>\u00a0(two nominations, zero awards).\u00a0<em>Insecure<\/em>\u00a0(two nominations, zero awards).\u00a0<em>Ozark<\/em>\u00a0(five nominations, zero awards).\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/american-vandal-season-2\/\">American Vandal<\/a><\/em>\u00a0(one nomination, zero awards). That doesn&#8217;t mean programs that\u00a0<em>did<\/em>\u00a0take home statuettes\u2014<em>Seven Seconds<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Godless<\/em>,\u00a0<em>The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story<\/em>\u2014weren&#8217;t talked about, they just never got discussed with the same breathless zeal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">All of which makes me wonder if the Academy of Motion Picture Arts &amp; Sciences might have been on to something with its\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2018\/09\/oscars-most-popular-film-category-scrapped-academy-board-1202458508\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">proposed-then-scrapped<\/a>\u00a0idea to introduce a &#8220;outstanding achievement in popular film&#8221; Academy Award category\u2014not for the Oscars, but the Emmys.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\"><em>You can&#8217;t be serious,<\/em>\u00a0you say.\u00a0<em>Look at all the genre series grabbing awards.<\/em>\u00a0Game of Thrones\u00a0<em>won Best Drama Series;<\/em>Westworld\u00a0<em>was everywhere! How can these not be &#8220;popular&#8221;?<\/em>\u00a0Look, yes, of course these are popular. And they&#8217;re also painstakingly produced and designed within a millimeter of the uncanny valley. Look at the Outstanding Period Costumes and Outstanding Fantasy\/Sci-Fi Costumes categories and you&#8217;ll find five of the seven Outstanding Drama Series nominees. Great shows, great aesthetics\u2014but while they&#8217;re certainly among the most sumptuous spectacles on TV, they&#8217;re not necessarily the best. (Also, I&#8217;m not saying\u00a0<em>Big Mouth<\/em>\u00a0is a better animated comedy than the eighth season of\u00a0<em>Bob&#8217;s Burgers<\/em>\u00a0and the millionth of\u00a0<em>The Simpsons<\/em>\u2014oh, wait, yes; yes, I am absolutely saying that.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">It&#8217;s a ridiculous and unnecessary understatement to say television has changed. In 2018,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/live-feed\/fx-chief-scripted-originals-set-top-520-2018-1073348\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">520 scripted series<\/a>\u00a0are expected to air on broadcast, cable, premium cable, and streaming services.\u00a0<em>Five hundred twenty<\/em>\u2014and that&#8217;s up from 487 in 2017. (That figure also doesn&#8217;t include Apple, which has reportedly thrown more than $1 billion at original programming for its as-yet-still-not-officially-announced content plans.) There&#8217;s simply no way for people to see every show, or discuss them\u2014which is why shows like\u00a0<em>The Sinner<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Killing Eve<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Big Mouth<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>The Good Place<\/em>, shows that have demonstrated reach far beyond their initial impact, matter so much.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">These are the shows that have managed to\u00a0<em>defeat the algorithm<\/em>. They might not be what a computer thought you&#8217;d like, but they bucked the feedstream and came to you via actual recommendation. They&#8217;re not the most ambitious, or expensive, or generationally sprawling. They&#8217;re the unearthed gems you enjoy so much you want other people to enjoy them too.
