As Disney\u00a0gears up<\/a>\u00a0for its own\u00a0streaming service<\/a>, Netflix is adding to its slate of\u00a0family content<\/a>, and it just revealed six new animated projects that are in the works. As\u00a0Variety<\/a><\/em>\u00a0reports, the latest animated additions include two films and four series, a few of which have some big names attached.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The newly announced films include\u00a0My Father’s Dragon<\/em>, which tells the story of a young runaway who goes off in search of a captive dragon, and\u00a0The Willoughbys<\/em>, an adaptation of a Lois Lowry novel about four children abandoned by their parents.\u00a0My Father’s Dragon<\/em>\u00a0comes from Oscar-nominated director Nora Twomey (The Secret of Kells<\/em>,\u00a0The Breadwinner<\/em>) and is written by Oscar-nominated\u00a0Inside Out<\/em>\u00a0writer Meg LeFauve.\u00a0The Willoughbys<\/em>, already in production, counts Ricky Gervais, Maya Rudolph, Will Forte, Martin Short, Alessia Cara and Jane Krakowski among its cast.<\/p>\n

Netflix has also greenlit a limited series called\u00a0Maya and the Three<\/em>\u00a0from Jorge Gutierrez (The Book of Life<\/em>) who will direct some of the series’ nine episodes and co-write the others. He told\u00a0Variety<\/em>\u00a0that he wants the show to be like a “Mexican\u00a0Lord of the Rings<\/em>, but hilarious.” The series will feature a female hero, half human and half divine, and will be set in a mythical Mesoamerican-inspired world. Additionally, Netflix has backed\u00a0Kid Cosmic<\/em>, a series from\u00a0Powerpuff Girls<\/em>\u00a0creator Craig McCracken about a boy who dreams of becoming a hero but struggles with his powers once he’s actually transformed into one.<\/p>\n

The two other series,\u00a0Trash Truck<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Go! Go! Cory Carson<\/em>, are geared towards preschool-aged kids. The six projects have release dates between 2019 and 2021.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
