After the poor box office results for “Alien: Covenant,” Ridley Scott might never return to the franchise.<\/p>\n

While the future of\u00a0Ridley Scott<\/a>\u2019s \u201cAlien<\/a>\u201d franchise on the big screen remains unclear, details about the intended next film, \u201cAlien: Awakening<\/a>,\u201d are coming into focus. As part of Empire Magazine\u2019s special \u201cAlien\u201d anniversary issue (via\u00a0AV Club<\/a>), the publication confirmed screenwriter\u00a0John Logan<\/a>, who co-wrote \u201cAlien: Covenant\u201d with\u00a0Dante Harper, has\u00a0already finished writing \u201cAwakening\u201d and the film is now waiting to be made. Empire even spilled the beans on the next sequel\u2019s plot.<\/p>\n

Following the events of \u201cCovenant,\u201d in which it was revealed the android David (Michael Fassbender) caused a genocide on the planet Paradise that wiped out the Engineer population, \u201cAwakening\u201d would find a group of Engineers who survived the mass murder making it their mission to exact revenge and kill David. The Engineers were first introduced in \u201cPrometheus\u201d and are humanity\u2019s forerunners. The fight was expected to bring both parties to LV-426, the planet featured in Scott\u2019s original \u201cAlien\u201d where Sigourney Weaver\u2019s Ripley first encountered the\u00a0Xenomorphs.<\/p>\n

The plot description for \u201cAwakening\u201d indicates Scott was planning to bring the entire franchise full circle with his next installment. Whatever went down in the battle between Fassbender\u2019s David and the remaining Engineers would probably give rise to the Xenomorph population Ripley eventually encounters. The sequel would also bring Fassbender back for his third \u201cAlien\u201d movie. Whatever people may think of Scott\u2019s prequel films, Fassbender\u2019s performance has been the most acclaimed element.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, the probability of \u201cAlien: Awakening\u201d ever becoming an actual film is low. \u201cCovenant\u201d was a box office bomb for 20th Century Fox when it was released in summer 2017, as it only grossed $74 million opposite a production budget near the $100 million mark. While the film\u2019s international gross brought its worldwide total to $240 million, there was an alarming drop in interest in the franchise from moviegoers.<\/p>\n

Following the release of \u201cCovenant,\u201d Scott opened the kidnapping drama \u201cAll the Money in the World.\u201d Whether or not \u201cAlien: Awakening\u201d happens, Scott will stay busy with projects such as \u201cGladiator 2\u201d and \u201cBattle of Britain\u201d in development.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
