Queen<\/a>\u00a0guitarist\u00a0Brian May<\/a>\u00a0predicted that actor\u00a0Rami Malek<\/a>\u00a0would appear on the Oscar nominations list for his work on\u00a0Bohemian Rhapsody<\/em><\/a>, and added that it would be well-deserved.<\/p>\n

The story of\u00a0Freddie Mercury<\/a>\u00a0has now\u00a0generated<\/a>\u00a0over $404 million and is on course to become the biggest-grossing music biopic in the North American market. Despite receiving some negative criticism for the film itself, most reviewers were complimentary about Malek\u2019s performance as Mercury.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s incredible,\u201d May\u00a0said<\/a>\u00a0of Malek. \u201cWithout doubt he\u2019ll be on the nominations list for an Oscar, and well deserved as well. He inhabited Freddie to the point where we even started to think of him as Freddie. Really remarkable.\u201d<\/p>\n

He continued, \u201cWe\u2019ve lived with this project for nine years and it\u2019s incredible to see it doing so well. It came out to shitty reviews, as some of our work has before, but the public has embraced it magnificently. Everybody gave 200 per cent, from the actors and technicians to the production team and hair and makeup, everyone. You don\u2019t get any lukewarm responses. The guy who plays me [Gwilym Lee] should be getting awards all over.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a recent interview with\u00a0Deadline<\/a>, Malek recalled how he\u2019d been honest about his lack of musical ability when he was discussed the role with producer Graham King. \u201cWe sat down for a six-hour meeting and he\u2019d really only seen me in\u00a0Mr Robot<\/em><\/a>, where I played this profoundly alienated, socially anxious human being who\u2019s a pretty far cry from Freddie Mercury,\u201d the actor said. \u201cGraham saw something in me\u2026 and gave me a shot. I said, \u2018listen, I\u2019m not a singer. I don\u2019t play the piano. I move in a very interesting way on a dance floor \u2013 I don\u2019t know if I\u2019d call it rhythm.\u2019\u2026 I just said, \u2018if I have the time, I can get there. If you help me out with the things I need.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

The Oscar nominations will be announced January 22, 2019.<\/p>\n
