The Wall Street Journal\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/apple-plans-new-lcd-iphone-this-year-despite-xrs-stumble-11547199263?mod=searchresults&amp;page=1&amp;pos=1\">reported<\/a>\u00a0on Friday that the company is set to release three new phones in the fall, and the new line of phones may help Apple recover from its current sales slump.<\/p>\n<\/aside>\n<p class=\"slate-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"slate.com\/_components\/slate-paragraph\/instances\/cjqsl57we000s3g5vtqp9ave0@published\" data-word-count=\"50\">It\u2019s worth keeping in mind that their release is still months away. The leaks emerging now are less substantial than they will be later in the year, and many preliminary plans may change in the interim. With that in mind, here\u2019s what\u2019s being whispered about the next generation of iPhones.<\/p>\n<p class=\"slate-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"slate.com\/_components\/slate-paragraph\/instances\/cjqsl4v5x000b3g5vz8a76qig@published\" data-word-count=\"2\"><strong>More Cameras<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"slate-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"slate.com\/_components\/slate-paragraph\/instances\/cjqsl4v4q00093g5vh5p9xkad@published\" data-word-count=\"42\">The rumored development that seems to be receiving the most hype is the addition of another camera for all three models. The Journal reports that the highest-end iPhone will have three rear-facing cameras, while the mid- and lower-tier models will have two.<\/p>\n<p class=\"slate-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"slate.com\/_components\/slate-paragraph\/instances\/cjqsl4v4s000a3g5vyqsvssy5@published\" data-word-count=\"49\">The Verge notes that the supplemental camera is likely a move\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2019\/1\/11\/18178185\/iphone-11-rumor-2019-triple-camera-system?ref=hvper.com\">to compete<\/a>\u00a0with the latest Android phones like the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/B07JFXV6TL\/?tag=slatmaga-20\">LG V40<\/a>, which has two front-facing and three rear-facing cameras. The V40\u2019s triple-threat camera system allows for more versatile photography options, including different angles, wider views, and telephoto shots.<\/p>\n<p class=\"slate-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"slate.com\/_components\/slate-paragraph\/instances\/cjqsl4v69000g3g5vtdc8lcoy@published\" data-word-count=\"3\"><strong>3D Depth Sensor<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"slate-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"slate.com\/_components\/slate-paragraph\/instances\/cjqsl4v67000e3g5vogcuefpz@published\" data-word-count=\"19\">Bloomberg\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2018-12-27\/sony-boosts-3d-camera-output-after-interest-from-phone-makers\">reported<\/a>\u00a0last month that Apple is in talks to potentially incorporate Sony\u2019s 3D sensors into the iPhone\u2019s cameras.<\/p>\n<p class=\"slate-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"slate.com\/_components\/slate-paragraph\/instances\/cjqsl4v5z000c3g5vzkffvuhi@published\" data-word-count=\"55\">The sensors take advantage of a technique called \u201ctime of flight,\u201d in which a device emits laser pulses and times how long they take to bounce back. This technology would allow the phones to improve facial recognition, measure depth for nighttime pictures, and render augmented reality images that can better interact with the actual world.<\/p>\n<p class=\"slate-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"slate.com\/_components\/slate-paragraph\/instances\/cjqsl4v69000h3g5vpya71aca@published\" data-word-count=\"1\"><strong>Display<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"slate-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"slate.com\/_components\/slate-paragraph\/instances\/cjqsl4v67000f3g5vq75iv224@published\" data-word-count=\"34\">MacRumors has maintained\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.macrumors.com\/2018\/05\/28\/2019-iphones-oled\/\">since May<\/a>\u00a0that there\u2019s a chance that all three of the 2019 iPhone models will have an OLED (organic light-emitting diode) display in Apple\u2019s gradual shift away from LCD (liquid-crystal display).<\/p>\n<p class=\"slate-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"slate.com\/_components\/slate-paragraph\/instances\/cjqsl4v6c000k3g5vomk63x0j@published\" data-word-count=\"32\">The Journal reported on Friday that two of the new models will have OLED, while one will have LCD. While LCD is less expensive, the OLED is supposed to have better contrast.<\/p>\n<p class=\"slate-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"slate.com\/_components\/slate-paragraph\/instances\/cjqsl4v61000d3g5vlq1szybl@published\" data-word-count=\"17\">The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/B07K97BQDF\/?tag=slatmaga-20\">iPhone XR<\/a>, 7, and 8 all have LCD, whereas the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/B07K8RQVHF\/?tag=slatmaga-20\">Xs and Xs Max<\/a>\u00a0have OLED.<\/p>\n<p class=\"slate-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"slate.com\/_components\/slate-paragraph\/instances\/cjqsl4v6a000i3g5vjcpuq6re@published\" data-word-count=\"1\"><strong>Appearance<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"slate-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"slate.com\/_components\/slate-paragraph\/instances\/cjqsl4v6b000j3g5vaemuo5tl@published\" data-word-count=\"20\">MacRumors reports that \u201cserial phone leaker\u201d Steve Hemmerstoffer posted supposed renderings of one of the devices on Digit on<a href=\"https:\/\/www.macrumors.com\/2019\/01\/06\/2019-iphone-triple-lens-rear-camera-renderings\/\">\u00a0Sunday<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"slate-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"slate.com\/_components\/slate-paragraph\/instances\/cjqsl4v8q000p3g5vgetnlndk@published\" data-word-count=\"43\">The triple-camera system radically changes the look of the rear of the phone, with a large square protrusion on the upper left-hand side. However, Hemmerstoffer added that this was a \u201cfreakingly early leak\u201d and that there\u2019s ample time for the design to change.<\/p>\n<p class=\"slate-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"slate.com\/_components\/slate-paragraph\/instances\/cjqsl4v6f000m3g5vz7ljhl1o@published\" data-word-count=\"2\"><strong>Apple Pencil<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"slate-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"slate.com\/_components\/slate-paragraph\/instances\/cjqsl4v6d000l3g5vidb46yx5@published\" data-word-count=\"56\">A Korean site called The Investor is\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theinvestor.co.kr\/view.php?ud=20171013000757\">reporting<\/a>\u00a0that Apple is developing a \u201cdigital pen\u201d for the new iPhones. This would seem to jibe with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.macrumors.com\/2018\/03\/23\/low-cost-ipad-apple-pencil-support\/\">rumors<\/a>\u00a0that iPhones will soon support the Apple Pencil, which is currently an accessory for iPads. MacRumors\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.macrumors.com\/roundup\/2019-iphones\/\">notes<\/a>, however, that The Investor \u201cdoes not have an established track record for accuracy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"slate-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"slate.com\/_components\/slate-paragraph\/instances\/cjqsl4v6g000n3g5v7in5qxnq@published\" data-word-count=\"4\"><strong>Will it be enough?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"slate-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"slate.com\/_components\/slate-paragraph\/instances\/cjqsl6ibx000y3g5vd97wma3b@published\" data-word-count=\"38\">Even with the new bells and whistles, it\u2019s unclear whether this new line of phones will actually help to boost Apple\u2019s sales figures. The company has been blaming its anticipated underperformance in Q1 on weak demand in China.<\/p>\n<p class=\"slate-paragraph\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"slate.com\/_components\/slate-paragraph\/instances\/cjqslulsm00053g5vlka40xeq@published\" data-word-count=\"45\">Experts\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/apple-plans-new-lcd-iphone-this-year-despite-xrs-stumble-11547199263?mod=searchresults&amp;page=1&amp;pos=1\">note<\/a>\u00a0that Chinese hardware makers have been quicker to add new features to their phones and sell them at a lower cost than Apple.
