As of this week, the company\u2019s plug-in now comes packaged in Microsoft\u2019s mobile Edge browser. It\u2019s a development that everyone should give their close attention.<\/p>\n<p>The update to Edge came with little promotion from Microsoft. The addition of NewsGuard to the mobile browser was first flagged by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/media\/2019\/jan\/23\/dont-trust-daily-mail-website-microsoft-browser-warns-users\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Guardian<\/a>, which pointed out that Edge users now get a warning when visiting the website for the UK tabloid the Daily Mail. \u201cProceed with caution: this website generally fails to maintain basic standards of accuracy and accountability,\u201d the abbreviated warning reads.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-container dfp dfp-slot-SPLASHYMID_MOBILE ad-splashy-mid\" data-ad-unit=\"SPLASHYMID_MOBILE\" data-targeting=\"{&quot;pos&quot;:&quot;splashymid&quot;}\"><\/div>\n<p>The use of fact checkers to rate news content on the web has become an increasingly popular option for platforms as inaccurate, misleading, and false news continues to plague the inter-webs and cause political trouble for companies that just want to focus on making money. Facebook\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gizmodo.com\/facebook-finally-rolls-out-disputed-news-tag-everyone-w-1792959827\" rel=\"nofollow\">attempts<\/a>\u00a0to rate news sites alongside shared links have generally been considered an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gizmodo.com\/facebooks-war-on-bullshit-is-not-going-well-we-talked-1828400556#_ga=2.224776344.349467790.1548163644-1413934084.1530101484\" rel=\"nofollow\">utter failure<\/a>, but NewsGuard thinks it can do better. When promoting its service, it\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/newsguard-extension-fake-news-trust-score\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">has emphasized<\/a>\u00a0that it uses real human beings to perform the evaluations based on a transparent set of nine criteria. In August, it told\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/newsguard-extension-fake-news-trust-score\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wired<\/a>\u00a0that it employs \u201cnearly 40 reporters and dozens of freelancers\u201d who are \u201cworking their way through 4,500 websites that they say account for 98 percent of the content shared online.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Using a desktop browser, you have to install the NewsGuard plug-in, but if you\u2019re part of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/in-the-new-browser-war-microsoft-edge-is-losing-internet-explorer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">small group<\/a>\u00a0of people who use the mobile Edge browser it should already be installed in the updated app. For now, it\u2019s an opt-in feature that can be enabled by going to \u201cSettings &gt; News Rating\u201d and toggling on the option for \u201cDisplay rating on the address bar.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The rating doesn\u2019t automatically pop-up; it simply shows a little shield icon in the browser bar that\u2019s either green or red\u2014green is good, red is bad. Clicking the icon drops down a short evaluation of the site\u2019s trustworthiness and gives you the option to \u201cSee the full Nutritional label.\u201d This longer evaluation is more detailed than Facebook\u2019s comparable fact-checking program, giving short summaries on what the site covers, who owns it, its overall credibility, and other categories. For example, Gizmodo gets a green rating and the short description says, \u201cThis website generally maintains basic standards of accuracy and accountability.\u201d Clicking the Gizmodo nutritional label brings up more information like this:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i.kinja-img.com\/gawker-media\/image\/upload\/lyqk3k25y45cqwby8ueh.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Further on in the rating, we get dinged for cross-posting an article from our sister-site Splinter to our homepage that calls Donald Trump a serial liar. \u201cLying involves intentionally stating falsehoods, and that can usually not be proven.\u201d We might push back on who you can or can\u2019t call a liar, but there\u2019s nothing egregious in the evaluation.<\/p>\n<p>Still, the idea of building in a fact-checking program at the browser level is troubling. NewsGuard has an incredibly well-connected\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsguardtech.com\/about\/team\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">team of leaders<\/a>that includes people like the former publisher of the Wall Street Journal, Louis Gordon Crovitz. Its\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsguardtech.com\/our-advisory-board\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">advisory board<\/a>\u00a0includes former CIA director Michael Hayden and George W. Bush\u2019s Secretary of Homeland Security Tom Ridge. Earlier this month,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mintpressnews.com\/newsguardneocon-backed-fact-checker-plans-to-wage-war-on-independent-media\/253687\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MintNews<\/a>\u00a0did a long dive into the NewsGuard leadership\u2019s uncomfortable ties to neocon think tanks as well as their own history of spreading false information. Crovitz, for example, wrote an op-ed in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/SB10000872396390444464304577539063008406518\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wall Street Journal<\/a>\u00a0that falsely claims Xerox PARC labs deserves \u201cfull credit\u201d for inventing the internet. This is an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.techdirt.com\/articles\/20120726\/03471619840\/wsj-still-hasnt-corrected-its-bogus-internet-revisionist-story-as-vint-cerf-xerox-both-claim-story-is-wrong.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">absurd<\/a>claim designed to advance the argument that private business is where real innovation happens. It\u2019s so absurd that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vint_Cerf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vint Cerf<\/a>, one of the fathers of the internet, felt\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/news\/no-credit-for-uncle-sam-in-creating-net-vint-cerf-disagrees\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">compelled to debunk<\/a>\u00a0this nonsense.<\/p>\n<p>All of NewsGuard\u2019s leaders and advisors bring the power to get shit done, as evidenced by this plug-in you\u2019ve probably never heard of suddenly being present in Edge. An opt-in option is no big deal, but there\u2019s no way to say for sure that it won\u2019t become a default mode over time. And even if users simply see the green or red icon, NewsGuard can have an impact. A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/knightfoundation.org\/reports\/assessing-the-effect-of-news-source-ratings-on-news-content\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a>\u00a0by Gallup and the Knight Foundation surveyed 2,000 adults in the U.S., showing them articles with and without NewsGuard\u2019s ratings. The study concluded readers were most likely to trust articles that included the green icon in the address bar. This intuitive perception of accuracy was being influenced by a very simple design tweak. And the possibility of this becoming part of every browser would make it an extremely powerful organization. Even if the company is currently the most open, transparent, and accurate fact checking source on the planet, that could all change down the line.<\/p>\n<p>We sent several questions to NewsGuard but did not receive an immediate reply and we\u2019ll update this post when we do. Above all, we want to know if there has been any discussion about turning NewsGuard on by default in Edge rather than making it opt-in.<\/p>\n<p>We also want to know how the company\u2019s business model works. NewsGuard\u2019s website includes\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsguardtech.com\/about\/why-should-you-trust-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lots of explanation<\/a>\u00a0for why you should trust the service but it\u2019s unclear how it intends to make a profit. Its leadership told Wired they hope \u201cthe tech companies that already dictate much of the world\u2019s information diet will license their nutrition labels in some form.\u201d I\u2019m not totally sure what that means, but they also said they envision licensing the ratings list to advertisers to help them build a white list of sites that are safe to place ads. Again, that\u2019s an enormous amount of power.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s also unclear exactly what NewsGuard will do with the data it collects. Its\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsguardtech.com\/privacy-policy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">privacy page<\/a>\u00a0goes to great lengths to assure users that no personally identifiable information is being automatically collected. But it also collects a litany of device information that could be valuable and it only stipulates that it does not share \u201ceven the anonymous information with any outside party for the purpose of advertising sales.\u201d What about for non-advertising purposes?<\/p>\n<p>Of course, there\u2019s plenty of reason to believe that any worst-case scenario will never come to fruition. Imagine the shit storm Microsoft would face from conservatives when their phone starts popping up a message that claims CNN is a trustworthy site. Imagine the shit storm Microsoft would face from liberals when their phone starts popping up a message that claims Fox News\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.niemanlab.org\/2018\/08\/newsguard-considers-fox-news-a-healthy-part-of-your-news-diet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">is a trustworthy site<\/a>.
