Over the past few years, Fox had really been hitting its stride as a competitor to Disney\u2019s Marvel Studios, crafting individualized, successful Marvel Comics adaptations like\u00a0<strong><em>Deadpool<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong><em>Logan<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0that stood in stark contrast to the universe-friendly, PG-13 MCU movies. But now, with Fox and therefore Fox\u2019s Marvel licenses (which include the X-Men characters) coming under Disney and Marvel Studios\u2019 purview, there\u2019s no longer a need for competition, and plans to continue crafting standalone Fox Marvel movies are in limbo.<\/p>\n<p>A number of Fox Marvel movies were in various stages of active development when Disney-Fox sale was announced.\u00a0<strong>Drew Goddard<\/strong>\u00a0was working on\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/collider.com\/tag\/x-force\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><em>X-Force<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, which is basically an R-rated\u00a0<em>X-Men<\/em>;\u00a0<strong>Channing Tatum<\/strong>\u00a0was still trying to get\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/collider.com\/tag\/gambit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><em>Gambit<\/em><\/strong><\/a>\u00a0off the ground; and the main\u00a0<em>X-Men<\/em>\u00a0series is spinning off with upcoming films like\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/collider.com\/tag\/dark-phoenix\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><em>Dark Phoenix<\/em><\/strong><\/a>\u00a0the horror-tinged\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/collider.com\/tag\/the-new-mutants\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><em>New Mutants<\/em><\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>With the latter two films in the can and everything else in a stage of arrested development, Collider\u2019s own Christina Radish asked producer\u00a0<strong>Lauren Shuler Donner<\/strong>\u00a0about the current status of the Fox Marvel movies during a recent 1:1 interview at the TCA\u2019s for the Donner-produced FX series\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/collider.com\/tag\/legion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><em>Legion<\/em><\/strong><\/a>. Donner has been with the\u00a0<em>X-Men<\/em>\u00a0franchise since the beginning but took a step back from day-to-day producing the films after\u00a0<em>Deadpool<\/em>. That said, she\u2019s still privy to what\u2019s going on, and she confirmed that the Fox Marvel movies are currently on hold, adding that she\u2019d like to see the main\u00a0<em>X-Men<\/em>\u00a0franchise go in \u201ca different direction\u201d after\u00a0<em>Dark Phoenix<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re likely in for some sort of big announcement about Marvel Studios\u2019 plans for the Fox Marvel properties later this year, after\u00a0<strong><em>Avengers: Endgame<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0hits theaters. But for now, see what Donner had to say about the future of the Fox Marvel movies below.<\/p>\n<p><strong>On the movie side of things, are\u00a0<em>X-Force<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Gambit<\/em>\u00a0still projects that are going ahead, or is everything on hold, at the moment, until the Disney acquisition is complete?<br \/>\n<\/strong><br \/>\nDONNER:\u00a0 Everything is on hold, since Disney took over. I, frankly, took a step back after\u00a0<em>Deadpool<\/em>, so I wasn\u2019t front and center, at all, for\u00a0<em>Apocalypse<\/em>\u00a0or\u00a0<em>New Mutants\u00a0<\/em>or Simon Kinberg\u2019s\u00a0<em>Dark Phoenix<\/em>. He took over, but these were things that I put in place. With\u00a0<em>Gambit<\/em>, certainly, it\u2019s too bad that it\u2019s taking so long because I really wanted to see that. It\u2019s such a great character. But, let\u2019s see. Let\u2019s hope so. Right now, it\u2019s all in Disney\u2019s hands. We don\u2019t know what they\u2019re gonna do. Now, it goes to Kevin Feige, who was my prot\u00e9g\u00e9. He and I started\u00a0<em>X-Men<\/em>\u00a0together, so I do trust him, not only based on knowing him and knowing how he knows the story so well, but on pure evidence. With his movies, there\u2019s not a bad one in the bunch. He\u2019ll figure it out. The problem lies in how many movies you can release in a year. Being a standalone movie help because they\u2019re not multiple character, real hardcore superhero movies. You don\u2019t want the audience to get sick of it. You don\u2019t want the audience not to go to this one because they already saw a superhero movie a couple months ago, or last month. That\u2019s the rub, right there.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/cdn.collider.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/x-force-comic-book-cover-second-coming.jpg\" width=\"463\" height=\"702\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Are you hoping to see the main\u00a0<em>X-Men\u00a0<\/em>franchise continue on, after\u00a0<em>Dark Phoenix<\/em>?<br \/>\n<\/strong><br \/>\nDONNER:\u00a0 I want it to go in a different direction, very much. I think we\u2019ve played that out and it needs to evolve. I don\u2019t know. There are lots of stories. There are some great stories to do, especially with Cable and with X-Force. I\u2019d love to see it. I really would. It\u2019s really hard. It\u2019s hard for everybody involved. Imagine the writers who were writing it, and then, all of a sudden, they have no idea, and they just have to stop. So, we\u2019ll see. I\u2019m sure it\u2019s been extremely frustrating for them. I do believe that the future of<em>\u00a0X-Men<\/em>\u00a0is good, though. It just depends on what it will be, and whether it\u2019s one character within another Marvel story. Poor Kevin must be up all night, trying to figure it out. That\u2019s a lot of characters to intertwine and send out into stories.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Would you like to see more TV series like<em>\u00a0Legion<\/em>, so that you could explore some of the characters in other ways?<br \/>\n<\/strong><br \/>\nDONNER:\u00a0 In the<em>\u00a0X-Men<\/em>\u00a0world, because we\u2019re much smaller and we\u2019re not Marvel, we have to be super careful. I think you have to pull it in and make it a one-character series, for viewer fatigue. You can\u2019t tell that X-Men story, over and over. We know the Charles and Magneto story. We know how the X-Men came together. We know the conflicts within. I don\u2019t know if we\u2019re going to go forward and do other shows. If we do, we have to go into a different area. At one point, we looked into Legion\u2019s world and X-Statix, and all of these different stories that we could do.
