Having recorded for Liberty and then RCA Records, the Texan notched just one Top Ten solo hit with \u201cTouch Me,\u201d in 1962. He wouldn\u2019t have another until 1975, by which time he was recording for Columbia Records, a move that afforded him more creative control over his material and the production of his albums.<\/p>\n<p>But between his seven-year stretch at RCA, and the golden \u2014 and platinum \u2014 years at Columbia, Nelson was living in Austin and entertaining the locals at the now-iconic\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-country-lists\/outlaw-country-exhibit-12-most-badass-items-at-country-hall-of-fames-new-showcase-628349\/\">Armadillo World Headquarters<\/a>. Beginning in 1973, he recorded a trio of exceptional albums for Atlantic Records. The first country artist signed to the label, which at the time was home to Led Zeppelin and Aretha Franklin, Nelson was championed by legendary producer and Atlantic executive Jerry Wexler. Both fans of Western swing and melodic jazz, Nelson and Wexler got along well, spending several days poring over tapes and listening to songs. Although the first project Nelson recorded for the label, a gospel album called\u00a0<em>The Troublemaker<\/em>, was shelved and later released by Columbia Records, his next,\u00a0<em>Shotgun Willie<\/em>, fired a powerful warning shot that the \u201coutlaw\u201d era was underway.<\/p>\n<p data-gtm-vis-recent-on-screen-9326027_26=\"146651\" data-gtm-vis-first-on-screen-9326027_26=\"146652\" data-gtm-vis-total-visible-time-9326027_26=\"100\" data-gtm-vis-has-fired-9326027_26=\"1\">Although uneasy at first in a new setting, Nelson recorded much of\u00a0<em>Shotgun Willie<\/em>\u00a0in New York, with Arif Mardin producing the bulk of the sessions and Wexler assisting on two Bob Wills classics. Well-received but a poor seller,\u00a0<em>Shotgun Willie<\/em>\u00a0was followed by the brilliant\u00a0<em>Phases &amp; Stages<\/em>. Released on March 6th, 1974, 45 years ago today, the LP bluntly chronicled the dissolution of a marriage from two perspectives, with \u201chis\u201d and \u201chers\u201d each occupying one side of the vinyl LP. As a concept album, it was a rarity in country music, so ambitious that\u00a0<em>Rolling Stone<\/em>\u00a0writer\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-album-reviews\/phases-and-stages-255419\/\">Chet Flippo feared at the time<\/a>\u00a0it might be dismissed as \u201cthe shitkicker\u2019s\u00a0<em>Tommy<\/em>,\u201d a reference to the Who\u2019s recent rock opera. Hailing it as \u201chis best work to date,\u201d Flippo singled out \u201cI Still Can\u2019t Believe You\u2019re Gone,\u201d which Nelson had penned for the late wife of his drummer, Paul English, as \u201cwithout doubt the saddest, most compelling [country] song I\u2019ve ever heard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Recorded in a setting even more unlikely for a country album than New York, the LP was cut in two days in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, with a powerhouse rhythm section that included Barry Beckett on keyboards and session guitarist Fred Carter Jr. In his 1993 autobiography,\u00a0<em>Rhythm and the Blues<\/em>, Wexler wrote of the decision to record in Muscle Shoals, then a veritable hotbed of R&amp;B session work, \u201cEveryone in Nashville thought I was out of my mind. They said Muscle Shoals was too R&amp;B for Willie; I said Willie was too R&amp;B for Nashville.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One of the up-tempo highlights of\u00a0<em>Phases &amp; Stages<\/em>\u00a0was \u201cBloody Mary Morning,\u201d a song detailing Nelson\u2019s own experiences as, in his own words, \u201ca lousy drunk.\u201d Like\u00a0<em>Shotgun Willie<\/em>\u2019s \u201cWhiskey River,\u201d it is now a familiar fixture in Nelson\u2019s live concerts and was one of the songs he performed during the 1974 pilot episode of\u00a0<em>Austin City Limits<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Although\u00a0<em>Phases &amp; Stages<\/em>\u00a0was a moderate seller \u2014 and pretty much put an end to Atlantic\u2019s country-music division at the time \u2014 it is now rightly regarded as a classic. It also paved the way for Nelson\u2019s major breakthrough a year later with another concept album.
