WEST Belfast actor Anthony Boyle won an Olivier last night for his role in a Harry Potter play.

Boyle (22), from Poleglass, was handed the Best Actor in a Supporting Role award for his performance of Draco Malfoy’s son Scorpius in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.

Speaking to the press after being handed the award at the glitzy ceremony at the Royal Albert Hall in London, he said he did not expect to win and had not written a speech.

“I want to thank my mum and dad, my wee sister, my auntie, my granddad, the whole family,” he said.

Kenneth  Branagh was recognised for his contribution to theatre at the Olivier Awards.

The Belfast-born star was honoured with the special award at the event which celebrates the best of London theatre, musicals, dance and opera and is named in honour of theatrical legend Laurence Olivier. Previous recipients of the special award include Kevin Spacey, Stephen Sondheim, Judi Dench and Ian McKellen.

Winners in most categories are chosen by a panel of stage professionals and theatre-goers.

Almost 30 gongs were handed out.
