Margot Robbie teases her pirates of the Caribbean movie

Margot Robbie teases information about the new Pirates of the Caribbean movie she’s starring in, hinting at a strong “girl power” element. Robbie’s Pirates project was announced in June this year and will be separate from the core movies released so far, focusing on new characters and plots. The as-yet-untitled film will be written by Christina Hodson, who also penned Robbie’s solo Harley Quinn movie, Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), leading to hopes the new film will be able to capture the DC film’s anarchic tone.

The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise is currently going through a transitional phase, with star Johnny Depp reportedly out of any future entries and fan desire for a new sequel at an all-time low thanks to the drop in quality in the most recent films. However, Disney is intent on squeezing as much profit as they can out of the landmark franchise while they still can, hence the dual films in development, including Robbie’s as well as a reboot written by Chernobyl’s Craig Mazin and Ted Elliott, co-writer on the first four Pirates movies.

Now, Robbie has briefly teased her latest collaboration with Hodson during an interview with Collider. When asked what to expect from her Pirates movie, Robbie half-jokingly says “a lot of girl power” before adding that she can’t reveal much at this early development stage. She does go on to say the project will add a much-needed “female element” to the franchise but says as she’s not a producer on the film, she can sit back and wait for the script to be produced without having to stress yet. “A lot of girl power. It’s too early to talk about it but I appreciate that you’re psyched on the combo. I love Christina obviously. I’m not a producer on Pirates, so I’ll sit back and kind of wait for the process the way you’re allowed to do as an actor, which is nice. I don’t have to stress about it just yet. We’re really, really excited at the prospect of kind of adding a very key female element to that world.”

Given her reduced role in the movie, it’s not surprising Robbie doesn’t feel like she can reveal anything, but her comments about adding a female element are a little strange. Despite its many failings, the franchise has mostly made sure its female stars – first Keira Knightley and then Kaya Scodelario in the most recent entry, Dead Men Tell No Tales – were more than just eye candy. Knightley’s Elizabeth Swann is undoubtedly a more interesting and proactive character in the original trilogy than most female characters in franchises of the time. However, Robbie may merely be referring to the fact this movie has a female writer, which would be a first for the franchise.

Additionally, she’s likely also touting the fact her character will be the main star of the movie, as opposed to the rest of the franchise efforts, where Elizabeth and the rest of the characters increasingly took a back seat to Depp’s Jack Sparrow, who was an immediate pop-culture phenomenon upon the first movie’s release. Regardless of how much girl power there is in the film, hopefully, Robbie and Hodson can pull off a fresh new take on the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, return it to its roots, and remind audiences why it was such a big hit in the first place.
