Tie-in merchandise for Thor: Love and Thunder reveals how Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) becomes Mighty Thor. Marvel Studios has yet to officially kick off the marketing for the upcoming Taika Waititi-directed flick. Thankfully, toys and other merchandise for Thor: Love and Thunder have started rolling out, giving fans an idea of what to expect from the blockbuster.
Directed by Taika Waititi, the upcoming film will reunite him with Chris Hemsworth after their first collaboration in 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok. Considering their previous collaboration’s success and that Thor is the first MCU hero to get a fourth film, fans are understandably excited for Thor: Love and Thunder. But aside from the God of Thunder’s story, there’s also equal excitement over Portman’s return to the franchise as Jane Foster. However, this time, she gets her own superhero persona in Mighty Thor. What’s unclear, however, is how she assumes that identity.
Thanks to some new Thor: Love and Thunder tie-in merchandise, Jane’s Mighty Thor origin appears to be confirmed. A photo from the back of a Marvel Legends Series figure includes a brief about the character’s story in the blockbuster. It confirms long-standing theories that Jane becomes Mighty Thor after she comes to possess Mjölnir. Check out the full image below courtesy of Thor: Love and Thunder News:
The plot description is short, but it poses a couple of questions that Thor: Love and Thunder could ultimately answer. Arguably the most important of them all is how does Jane acquire Mjölnir? Based on the images fans have seen of the character, she’s wielding a broken and repaired hammer, which hints that it’s the same one that Hela (Cate Blanchett) destroyed at the beginning of Thor: Ragnarok. Perhaps Jane was able to acquire the pieces of the hammer, and her worthiness welded them back together. She effectively becomes Mighty Thor, but if rumors that Thor: Love and Thunder will mine story inspiration from Jason Aaron’s popular Mighty Thor run from 2015 t0 2018 turn out to be accurate, there’s a chance that Marvel Studios is also adapting Jane’s cancer narrative from the comics.
With just roughly three months to go before Thor: Love and Thunder hits theaters, Marvel Studios is expectedly gearing up to kickstart the film’s marketing in the next few days. There is no word yet when a trailer will debut, but recent clues hint that it might be coming soon. Even then, it’s safe to say that the promotional campaign will be measured; it’s possible that the trailers might not even fully reveal Jane as Mighty Thor as Waititi saves the reveal for the actual film.
