NGradio So good... like you
The very first trailer for EA Sports’ FIFA 18 has gone live. The game is the next entry in the long-running series to make use of DICE’s revered Frostbite game engine. The trailer outlines some of the gameplay while also giving gamers playing on the Xbox One, PC and PS4 a release date that’s set for September 29th later this year.
The game is centered around international soccer superstar, Cristiano Ronaldo, one of the all-time top scoring players for Real Madrid. He also managed to pick up the award from FIFA for Men’s Best Player.
The one thing you’ll note from the trailer is that it starts with the text at the bottom “Game Engine Footage”, letting gamers know that, through and through, this is running in real-time on the Frostbite.
For those of you who don’t know, in-engine footage is using the same assets as the game itself, but usually centered around making the game looking as cinematic as possible. It’s not a lie or false advertisement because what you see is what the game is actually capable of producing. It’s one of the things that DICE perfected when it introduced the Frostbite 3 for Battlefield 3 way back in 2011, by showcasing to gamers the use of Geomerics’ Enlighten and real-time animations and particle effects that looked equivalent to that of graphics generated for cinematics.
DICE’s use of the Frostbite was so impressive for Battlefield 3 and later Battlefield 4 that Electronic Arts made it mandatory for the rest of the studios working under them to use DICE’s engine since it was capable of hitting CG-quality output in real-time. As you can see in the trailer above, Cristiano has sweat running down his face, sub-surface scattering, and lots of dynamic realistic looking movements thanks to the Frostbite’s ANT system. This helps give FIFA an extremely realistic look and feel, as indicated in the trailer above.
With the latest game the developers are hoping to blur the lines between virtual and reality. I don’t think they’ve quite reached that level yet, but it definitely gives Kojima’s Fox Engine that powers Konami’s PES games a serious run for its money.
The actual gameplay trailer for FIFA 18 featuring more than just in-engine cinematics will go live during the EA Play press conference that kicks off the week long hype that is E3 2017.
Electronic Arts has a heck of a lot of confidence in the upcoming game, because pre-orders have already been opened up over on the official EA Sports website.
Those who pre-order the special Icon Edition will gain access to the game three days ahead of its September 29th release, along with access to an exclusive Ronaldo Loan, special FUT kits, and a few other goodies.
Expect more details for FIFA 18 to go live during the EA Play press conference this upcoming weekend.
