The political film “Vice” made a big move in the race to the Oscars Thursday morning, picking up six Golden Globe Award nominations.
Adam McKay’s Dick Cheney biopic snagged nominations for best comedy or musical, best actor for Christian Bale as the former vice president, best actress for Amy Adams as wife Lynne Cheney, and supporting actor for Sam Rockwell as President George W. Bush.
Oscar contender “A Star Is Born” – which earned five nominations total – was recognized in the drama category, along with “If Beale Street Could Talk,” “BlacKkKlansman,” “Black Panther” and “Bohemian Rhapsody.” “The Favourite” and “Green Book” also got five nods each and vie for best comedy or musical with “Mary Poppins Returns,” “Crazy Rich Asians” and “Vice.”

FX miniseries “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story” led all TV nominees with four honors, including best limited series.
In the other major film categories, Lady Gaga (“A Star Is Born”) faces off for best dramatic actress against Glenn Close (“The Wife”), Melissa McCarthy (“Can You Ever Forgive Me?”), Nicole Kidman (“Destroyer”) and Rosamund Pike (“A Private War”). Gaga also was named in the original-song category for “Shallow,” the catchy tune she co-wrote for “A Star Is Born.”
n the field for best dramatic actor, Bradley Cooper (“A Star Is Born”) takes on Rami Malek (“Bohemian Rhapsody”), Lucas Hedges (“Boy Erased”), John David Washington (“BlacKkKlansman”) and Willem Dafoe (“At Eternity’s Gate”). Cooper, a first-time director for “A Star Is Born,” picked up a best-director nomination as well.
“The Favourite” star Olivia Colman, who plays Queen Anne, is a favorite for lead actress in a comedy/musical, joining Emily Blunt (“Mary Poppins Returns”), Elsie Fisher (“Eighth Grade”), Charlize Theron (“Tully”) and Constance Wu (“Crazy Rich Asians”).
Up for lead actor in a comedy or musical along with Bale are Lin-Manuel Miranda (“Mary Poppins Returns”), Viggo Mortensen (“Green Book”), Robert Redford (“The Old Man & the Gun”) and John C. Reilly (“Stan & Ollie”).
Adams, who also nabbed a TV drama actress nomination for HBO’s “Sharp Objects,” is up for best supporting actress in a category that also includes Claire Foy (“First Man”), Regina King (“If Beale Street Could Talk”) and “The Favourite” co-stars Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz.
Supporting-actor nominations went to Rockwell – who won the category for last year’s “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” – as well as Mahershala Ali (“Green Book”), Timothee Chalamet (“Beautiful Boy”), Adam Driver (“BlacKkKlansman”) and Richard E. Grant (“Can You Ever Forgive Me?”).
The animated-movie category was very heroic, with “Incredibles 2” and “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” joining “Mirai,” “Ralph Breaks the Internet” and “Isle of Dogs,” which also snagged a nomination for original score.
McKay was a double nominee for “Vice.” He’s in the best-director category along with Cooper, Alfonso Cuaron (“Roma”), Peter Farrelly (“Green Book”) and Spike Lee (“BlacKkKlansman”). And McKay’s “Vice” script is up for best screenplay alongside “If Beale Street Could Talk,” “Green Book,” “The Favourite” and “Roma.”
The 76th annual Golden Globes, hosted by Andy Samberg and Sandra Oh, air Jan. 6 on NBC (8 p.m. EST/5 PST).
