Background

When doing press or making social media posts to promote a new movie, some actors get a little *too* excited and forget that not many people have watched it yet. They accidentally reveal spoilers, much to the delight of fans and chagrin of studio heads.

The MCU cast in particular are known for getting spoiler-happy, and it’s not just Tom Holland and Mark Ruffalo.

Here are 24 times the Marvel cast spoiled their own movies:

Warning: Spoilers ahead for basically every MCU movie beyond Captain America: The First Avenger.

1. At a press conference two days before The Avengers premiered, Robert Downey Jr. revealed that the cast would be reuniting to film one final scene that very night.

At an Entertainment Weekly roundtable two days after the premiere, director Joss Whedon told RDJ, “Thank you for having every reporter ask me what we were shooting.”

2. Dave Bautista told Good Morning Britain that, after being turned to dust in Avengers: Infinity War, the Guardians of the Galaxy would be resurrected in Avengers: Endgame.

“It’s comforting, but at the same time I felt a sense of guilt because I don’t know if I was supposed to say anything, and nobody told me not to say anything,” he said.

3. When Zoe Saldana was asked about filming her final scene as Gamora in Avengers: Infinity War, she said it was “more like a [to be continued].”

She told E!, “It felt like see you later, not like a formal goodbye.”

Later, she posted a behind-the-scenes video of herself getting into Gamora’s hair and makeup for Avengers: Infinity War reshoots.

4. Owen Wilson told Esquire that, after he accidentally revealed he had a mustache to play Mobius in Loki, he received an ominous text that said, “Strike One.”

He said, “I don’t know who that was, we think it might have been Kevin Feige using a burner phone, but that wasn’t confirmed.”

5. Evangeline Lilly posted a picture of the Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania script on Instagram and tagged Corey Stoll, leading fans to speculate that he’ll return as Yellowjacket.

She quickly deleted the post, but director Peyton Reed told Screen Junkies that Yellowjacket “could be somewhere down in that Quantum Realm.”

6. Deciding he was “allowed to say whatever [he wanted],” Frank Grillo told the UFC Unfiltered podcast that he’d be returning as Crossbones in an Avengers: Endgame flashback scene.

“There was one scene, I think, we had where everybody was there. I can’t really talk about that scene, but I knew it took them three months in planning this scene to have everyone there,” he told the Independent

8. At the 2016 San Diego Comic-Con, Elizabeth Debicki revealed that her character, Ayesha, would be a villain in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

She said, “She enlists [the Guardians] and it’s all going swimmingly until it all turns very, very sour. Let’s just say it goes from amiable to not-so-amiable quite quickly.”

9. After filming on Avengers: Endgame wrapped, Chris Evans tweeted a final goodbye to Captain America, sparking rumors that he wouldn’t return to the MCU.

Despite later reports that he was returning, both Chris himself and Marvel president Kevin Feige clarified that he has no current plans to reprise his role.

10. Ben Kingsley attended the premiere of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, confirming his return as Trevor Slattery.

He told Digital Spy, “Trevor, of course, is a Shakespearean actor and he finds himself transported into a completely exotic environment.”

11. Samuel L. Jackson flat out told an Entertainment Weekly reporter that audiences would finally learn how Nick Fury lost his eye in Captain Marvel.

He said, “You’ll see, specifically, the origin of what happened to his eye. You’ll find out that he does have a family, that’s referenced. You don’t see them, but they are referenced in another way.”

12. In the same interview, Samuel L. Jackson hinted at the importance of time travel to defeat Thanos in Avengers: Endgame.

He said, “[The Avengers] are up against some really, really tough odds right now, so now we know that we need something that’s as powerful as Thanos…[Captain Marvel is] one of the few people in the Marvel universe that can time travel, so…”

13. Gwyneth Paltrow made an Instagram story post showing herself wearing a mocap suit, which tipped off fans to Pepper’s return in Avengers: Infinity War.

She said, “Pepper and Tony have had a real long journey together. She obviously starts as his dutiful assistant, and then the relationship evolves, and now this decade later they’re married, and they have a child. Their relationship has evolved in all of the ways that great romances evolve.”

15. Mark Ruffalo went live on Instagram at the premiere of Thor: Ragnarok, and, forgetting to end the broadcast, he live streamed the first 20 minutes from his pocket.

People messaged him to warn him, but he didn’t realize what was going on until a Disney representative found him in the audience and told him to turn it off.

16. In a joint interview with Don Cheadle, Mark Ruffalo revealed that virtually all of the characters died in Avengers: Infinity War.

In a later interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Don assured fans that Mark didn’t face any real fallout from Marvel Studios following his flub.

17. During a joint ET interview with Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo described the fake scenes he was given for Avengers: Endgame and caught himself right after he revealed that Captain America ended the movie in a relationship.

“You’re…rolling it right back to where we started. We thought you had grown,” Chris joked.

In another interview with E!, Mark revealed that he shot five different endings, which Chris said was because he’d earned “no trust” in the MCU. “You leak [spoilers} like a bodily function,” Chris said.

18. At a San Diego Comic-Con appearance before the release of Spider-Man: Homecoming, Tom Holland said that Peter Parker would start using mechanical web shooters.

He said, “We’re working on different ways of doing it. For different types of webs, you see. There’s not just [the typical way] … Oh, I might have given something away there.”

19. While promoting Spider-Man: Homecoming, Tom Holland shared that he’d signed on for two more solo films, which had yet to be officially announced.

“There is still a lot of room for Peter Parker and Spider-Man especially to grow in the next two movies. It’s going to be an exciting couple of movies,” he told AlloCine.

20. When Mark Ruffalo sent him the Avengers: Infinity War poster, Tom Holland decided to open it on Instagram Live, revealing the words “Confidential: Do not share” on the back.

Marvel officially released the poster later that day, and Mark joked that he “didn’t spoil this one.”

21. While explaining the fake scripts Marvel gives him to prevent him from revealing spoilers, Tom Holland revealed that Spider-Man would spend part of Avengers: Infinity War in space.

“I don’t even know how to react to what Tom just said there,” Jimmy Kimmel joked in response.

22. Thinking the theater had just watched Avengers: Infinity War, Tom Holland ran on stage and announced “I’m alive!” — spoiling Spider-Man’s death.

After Tom was warned not to spoil anything else, Benedict Cumberbatch took over the introduction. “Spider-Man’s not dead,” he insisted. “We can’t wait for you to actually see it…to see the spoilers and the non-spoilers.”

23. Even with Benedict Cumberbatch there to monitor him, Tom Holland blurted out how the Quantum Realm from Ant-Man would play into Avengers: Endgame.

For the Spider-Man: Far From Home trailer, Tom was tasked with issuing a spoiler disclaimer. During an interview with the cast, Jimmy Kimmel joked that the move was like “making the bad kid the hall monitor.”

24. All the way back in 2019, Tom Holland talked about Doctor Strange’s involvement and the time rift in Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Strange casts a spell around himself and Peter

He told CinemaBlend, “I just really like the idea of a science guy being teamed up with a guy who does magic, because it totally contradicts what he knows. And I like the idea that there is real science that Peter Parker talks about, and then there’s Doctor Strange gibberish, where he’s like, ‘The time rift, and the thing and the thing.’ So, it’s kind of fun.”

And here is the final tally:

Tom Holland is in first with 7, Mark Ruffalo in second with 3, Samuel L Jackson and Gwyneth Paltrow tied for third with 2 each, and everyone else on the list has 1
