With regular movie theaters in Massachusetts closed for now during the coronavirus pandemic, drive-in theaters are having a moment.
The Mendon Drive-In had sellout crowds on opening weekend. Route 1 dining destination Kowloon plans to add a drive-in theater to its parking lot. Now, a traditional movie theater is adding a temporary drive-in theater option, and its first show is already sold out.
Showcase Cinemas de Lux, in partnership with Patriot Place, announced that it will open a pop-up at Showcase Cinema de Lux Patriot Place in Foxborough. Its first showing, a May 30 screening of “Raiders of the Lost Ark” benefitting the Foxboro Food Pantry, sold out almost immediately, according to the theater chain.
Tickets for three showings in June, however, are still available: “Onward” (Friday, June 5); “Trolls World Tour” (Friday, June 12); and “Sonic the Hedgehog” (Friday, June 19).
Tickets are $20 per vehicle. Each movie starts at sunset, or approximately 8:45 p.m. Tickets and concessions must be purchased in advance on the Showcase Cinemas app, and snacks are available via curbside pickup. The theater is asking patrons to stay in their cars during the movie, and when you do leave to use the bathroom, a mask is required.
Additional information is available on the Showcase Cinemas website.
