Background

Guns N’ Roses frontman Axl Rose will be a busy man in 2016. The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer will spend his summer touring with his old bandmates in the “Not in This Lifetime” stadium tour. But in a few weeks, he’ll also hit the road as the new lead singer of AC/DC, replacing Brian Johnson on that band’s “Rock or Bust” world tour.

AC/DC made the announcement Saturday in a statement released on the band website. Rose will perform with AC/DC first on its European dates, staring May 7 in Lisbon, Portugal, and ending June 12 in Aarhus, Denmark. He’ll then join Guns ‘N Roses for the first leg of its U.S. tour, a 20-city run that kicks off June 22 at Ford Field in Detroit, and ends Aug. 22 in San Diego.

The AC/DC statement said 10 postponed U.S. AC/DC shows, including gigs in Cleveland and Columbus, will be rescheduled, too, and “announced imminently, also with Axl Rose.”

“AC/DC band members would like to thank Brian Johnson for his contributions and dedication to the band throughout the years,” the statement said. “We wish him all the best with his hearing issues and future ventures. As much as we want this tour to end as it started, we understand, respect and support Brian’s decision to stop touring and save his hearing. We are dedicated to fulfilling the remainder of our touring commitments to everyone that has supported us over the years, and are fortunate that Axl Rose has kindly offered his support to help us fulfill this commitment.”

Guns N’ Roses is already playing its first string of reunion shows. They started April 1 in Los Angeles, then played April 8-9 in Las Vegas. They also performed Saturday at the Coachella music festival and are booked there for another gig April 23. They are slated to play April 19-20 in Mexico City, too.
