Listen to David Bowie’s New Song, ‘Lazarus’

Last month, David Bowie unveiled the first song from his upcoming album, ★ (which is pronounced Blackstar), the nearly 10-minute title track, “Blackstar.” Now, as we approach the release date for the LP, he’s premiering a second song: “Lazarus.”

You can listen to the cut, which clocks in at six and a half minutes, above.

Like “Blackstar,” “Lazarus” slowly builds as ambient and jazz shadings collide over the musical landscape Bowie and producer Tony Visconti have constructed. It’s a bit more accessible than the experimental and sorta strange “Blackstar,” but still falls in with the rumors that have surfaced regarding the album’s outre nature.

According to The Guardian, “Lazarus” is the only song from the stage musical of the same name that recently opened to appear on ★. The track’s official video will be released on Jan. 7, one day before the album will be released.

The LP, Bowie’s 25th studio record, follows 2013’s surprise comeback, The Next Day. Visconti said that album “started out trying to do something new, but something old kept creeping in. Not this [one].”

★ is available on CD, digital audio and vinyl. A limited-edition clear vinyl version is also available. All formats can be pre-ordered now.
