Global singing sensation Sam Smith has set two new Guinness World Records titles in the space of a month after his debut album ‘In the Lonely Hour’ broke the record for the Most Consecutive Weeks in the UK Top 10 Album Charts with a staggering 69 week stay.
He also now holds the record for First James Bond theme to reach No.1 in the UK charts with ‘Writing’s on the Wall’, the track for the upcoming Spectre film.
Sam’s debut album ‘In the Lonely Hour’, went straight to number one when it was released in May 2014 and went on to maintain its spot in the Top 10 of the UK Album Charts for 69 consecutive weeks until just last week when it dropped to number 11.
It currently sits in seventh spot. The 23 year-old singer’s achievements surpassed the previous record held by Emeli Sandé and her album ‘Our Version of Events’ which spent 63 weeks in the UK Top 10.
Prior to this, The Beatles’ debut album ‘Please Please Me’, amassed 62 successive Top 10 chart weeks following its release in March 1963. Smith wasn’t quite done there though and after months of eager anticipation to hear his 007 title song, ‘Writing’s on the Wall’ rocketed to number one in the first week of its release.
This was the first time in history that a James Bond soundtrack has ever reached number one during its 52 year tenure.
To make everything official, Guinness World Records visited Sam this week to present him with his awards and hear his reaction to his record breaking feats.
After an official certificate presentation at RAK Studios in north London, Sam said: “This is so amazing! It’s such an honour to be recognised by Guinness World Records. It’s been an unbelievable eighteen months – The album exceeded even my wildest dreams thanks to the incredible support of my fans, and to record the first ever Bond theme to reach No.1 in the UK is a real privilege.”
Guinness World Records Editor-in-Chief Craig Glenday said: “Sam Smith has had an incredible impact on the music industry since his debut album first hit the charts last year and the longevity of its stay is truly astonishing. His second Guinness World Records title is equally as impressive as many talented artists for over half a century have tried and failed to write a James Bond theme and get it to the top of charts so what Sam has achieved will always be remembered in the record books.”
