Acclaimed actor Benedict Cumberbatch is a staple in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Here’s what we know about the upcoming film, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and the information Cumberbatch recently shared about the sequel.

How Benedict Cumberbatch became famous

Cumberbatch got his start in his native U.K. in the early ’00s. He appeared in numerous theater productions, including the 2011 run of Frankenstein at the Royal National Theatre. Cumberbatch also made a splash on TV with his breakout role in the celebrated series Sherlock as the titular detective.

In the years since becoming a household name, Cumberbatch has taken on a variety of incredible roles in film. From fantastical IPs like The Hobbit franchise and Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle to biographical adaptations such as The Imitation Game and The Current War, this is one actor who can really do it all.

He portrays Doctor Strange in the MCU

Naturally, Cumberbatch’s range makes him a perfect choice for the MCU. And his propensity towards highly intelligent characters made him Disney’s choice to portray Dr. Stephen Strange, a surgeon who becomes a superhero when he stumbles upon ancient mystic arts.

Cumberbatch first appeared in the 2016 solo film Doctor Strange, which details the character’s origins. He made a brief cameo appearance in Thor Ragnarok and then reprised his role in the team-up films Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.

The sequel will be called ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’

Unlike many of his fellow superheroes, Doctor Strange has yet to receive a sequel of any kind. All focus in the MCU was on the big Avengers films of 2018 and 2019. Now that those are complete, we can move onto the next phase (literally — Phase 4) and see what’s ahead for Marvel.

At San Diego Comic-Con in July 2019, head honcho Kevin Feige announced several new movies and TV series starring the heroes we know and love (as well as some new faces). Among them is the upcoming movie Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which is due out in Spring 2021.

Here’s what Cumberbatch revealed about the upcoming film

Thus far, we know very little about the Doctor Strange sequel. Cumberbatch will return, as will director Scott Derrickson. Additionally, Elizabeth Olsen will play return as Wanda Maximoff (aka Scarlet Witch), a character who has had little interaction with Stephen Strange. Jade Bartlett is writing the script.

In a recent GQ interview, Cumberbatch revealed the tiniest bit of information about the upcoming film. When asked about the hand gestures that Strange and Wong (Benedict Wong) use to open portals, the actor said, “I think we’re kind of done with the kind of circular movement. We’ll see that evolving, I think, in the next installment.” So it sounds as though he knows a little bit about what his character will be doing in the sequel.

Will he be in any other Marvel movies?

Could Doctor Strange appear in any other Marvel projects aside from his upcoming sequel? It’s unlikely, but there is one possibility. Olsen will first be starring in the upcoming Disney+ series WandaVision, which is thought to then lead into Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. So could Cumberbatch make an appearance in the show? Anything is possible.
