Background

Stephen Colbert took time out of Monday’s Late Night With Stephen Colbert to pay tribute to Muhammad Ali, the legendary boxer who died Friday at age 74.

Colbert praised Ali for his braggadocio and skill inside the ring, joking that Ali’s boastful manner “paved the way for so many other people of color” … before showing a photo of Donald Trump. Kidding aside, the late-night host also highlighted Ali’s way with words, saying he elevated trash talk into an art form and made an impact on pop culture that won’t soon be forgotten..

“Nothing sums up the defiant, culture changing spirt of Muhammad Ali like when he said, ‘I am America. I am the part you won’t recognize. But get used to me. Black, confident, cocky; my name, not yours; my religion, not yours; my goals, my own; get used to me,’” Colbert said.

After the audience applause died down, he continued: “He helped create the America we live in today. And I mean the good things in America, not that Whopperito thing.”

Watch Colbert’s tribute, which includes an interview with Ali’s friend and fellow sports legend, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
