Lin-Manuel Miranda is just an Oscar away from EGOT, and we now know his category placement at upcoming awards for “Mary Poppins Returns.” Disney Studios has announced on its FYC campaign website that he will compete in the leading race as Best Actor. That decision will apply for Academy Awards 2019, Golden Globes, SAG Awards, BAFTA, Critics’ Choice and more (although Academy Awards voters can place contenders wherever they wish).

The Rob Marshall film opening December 19 is a sequel to the original Disney smash from 1964, which won Julie Andrews a Best Actress Oscar. The plot involves the title character returning to visit the adult versions of the Banks children and help them through new difficulties in their lives. Emily Blunt takes over the role from Andrews.

Blunt, of course, is campaigning as Best Actress. Three-time Oscar champ Meryl Streep and honorary Oscar recipient Angela Lansbury along with Emily Mortimer are listed in the Best Supporting Actress category. Oscar winner Colin FirthBen Whishaw and Dick Van Dyke (who is also just an Oscar short of EGOT) are competing for recognition as Best Supporting Actor.

The original classic also won Oscars for Best Editing (Cotton Warburton), Best Special Visual Effects (Peter EllenshawHamilton LuskeEustace Lycett), Best Original Score (Richard M. ShermanRobert B. Sherman) and Best Original Song for “Chim Chim Cher-ee” (the Sherman brothers).

For the 2018 film, Marc Shaiman composed the score and has two original song contenders co-written with Scott Wittman: “The Place Where Lost Things Go” and “Trip a Little Light Fantastic.” Just like Miranda and Van Dyke, Shaiman also attempts to win an Oscar and achieve EGOT himself.
