Wonder Woman TV Spot Gives First-Look At David Thewlis’ Ares

If you have been wondering where Wonder Woman’s villain is, then you don’t need to wonder much longer. The much-anticipated movie will see David Thewlis play its de facto villain Ares when it debuts in June. However, up until now, no one has seen the British actor in-character as the fearsome character. Now, a new TV spot for the movie is giving fans their first-look at the villain, and it is a bit underwhelming.

UPDATE: Director Patty Jenkins just released a new TV spot for Wonder Woman which shows part of Ares in his costume. The clip briefly shows the villain’s armored hand surrounded by fire. You can check out the image below.

In the footage, Steve Trevor can be seen talking to an unknown man as a voice over plays. “She and I are – uh – working together, sir,” Trevor tells his superior. But, when the camera pans, fans can finally see that Trevor is speaking with the character played by David Thewlis. In his plain-old human form, Ares is in disguise under the name Sir Patrick Morgan.

In Wonder Woman, Thewlis plays Ares, an ancient villain who covets war more than anything in the world. DC Comics has a rich history of involving Ares in human conflicts such as World War II, so Wonder Woman will riff off that idea. The film is set during World War I, so fans will get to see how Thewlis’ character orchestrates the deadly event behind-the-scenes.

However, fans have a rather docile image of the man right now. In the TV spot, Thewlis is shown wearing a fancy button-up whilst sporting a styled mustache. However, in his villainous form, Ares looks wholly terrifying. No images of Ares in his battle wear has been released yet, but promotional images have teased the look is very similar to his comic style. Ares will don a massive helmet and plated armor that shines with a rusty orange-red hue.

For now, fans can take comfort it knowing they have at least seen Thewlis in-action for Wonder Woman. It is clear the character will have a complicated history with Steve Trevor moving forward since the man is meant to be a superior of the character. With Wonder Woman now in the fray, Ares will have to contend with the warrior while trying to fulfill his vision of eternal war on Earth.

Clearly, Wonder Woman won’t be keen to see that go down.

Patty Jenkins directs the film from a screenplay by Allan Heinberg and Geoff Johns, story by Zack Snyder and Allan Heinberg, based on characters from DC Entertainment. Wonder Woman was created by William Moulton Marston.

The DCEU continues when Wonder Woman opens in theaters on June 2, 2017, followed by Justice League on November 17, 2017; Aquaman on July 27, 2018; Shazam on April 5, 2019; Justice League 2 on June 14, 2019; Cyborg on April 3, 2020; and Green Lantern Corps on July 24, 2020. The Flash, The Batman, Dark Universe and Man of Steel 2 are currently without a release dates.
