Ανοιχτή επιστολή καλλιτεχνών στους Radiohead: “Μην παίξετε στο Ισραήλ”

Αγαπητοί Thom Yorke, Jonny Greenwood, Colin Greenwood, Ed O’Brien and Philip Selway,

Είστε στη λίστα για να παίξετε στο Τελ Αβίβ τον Ιούλιο αυτού του έτους.

Θα θέλαμε να σας ζητήσουμε να το ξανασκεφτείτε – διότι παίζοντας εκεί, στην πραγματικότητα θα παίξετε σε ένα καθεστώς  το οποίο οι εισηγητές των Ηνωμένων Εθνών χαρακτηρίζουν ως  «ένα σύστημα πολιτικής φυλετικού διαχωρισμού που έχει επιβληθεί τον Παλαιστινιακό λαό».

Καταλαβαίνουμε ότι ήδη σας έχουν προσεγγίσει Παλαιστίνιοι αγωνιστές. Σας ζήτησαν να σεβαστείτε το κάλεσμα τους για πολιτιστικό μποικοτάζ στο Ισραήλ. Από τη στιγμή που οι Radiohead έχουν αγωνιστεί για την ελευθερία στο Θιβέτ, αναρωτιόμαστε γιατί απορρίψατε το αίτημα να υποστηρίξετε ακόμα έναν λαό που βρίσκετε κάτω από ξένη κατοχή. Επίσης από τη στιγμή που οι Radiohead , πρωταγωνίστησαν σε συναυλία για την επέτειο των  50 χρόνων για την Οικουμενική Διακήρυξη Των Ανθρωπίνων Δικαιωμάτων, αναρωτιόμαστε γιατί αγνοήσατε ένα κάλεσμα για εναντίωση στην άρνηση αυτών των δικαιωμάτων σχετικά με τους Παλαιστίνιους.

Οι Radiohead κάποτε, είχαν κάνει μία δήλωση που έλεγε: «Χωρίς το έργο των οργανισμών όπως η Διεθνής Αμνηστία, η Παγκόσμια Διακήρυξη θα ήταν απλή ρητορική». Προφανέστατα έχετε διαβάσει τις εκθέσεις της Διεθνούς Αμνηστίας, οπότε γνωρίζετε ότι το Ισραήλ αρνείται την ελευθερία στους υπό κατοχή Παλαιστίνιους, οι οποίοι δεν μπορούν να μείνουν όπου επιθυμούν, δεν μπορούν να ταξιδέψουν όπου θα θέλανε, οι οποίοι κρατούνται ( και συχνά βασανίζονται ) χωρίς κάποια κατηγορία ή δίκη και δεν μπορούν ούτε το Facebook να χρησιμοποιήσουν χωρίς να τους επιτηρούν, να τους λογοκρίνουν ακόμα και να τους συλλαμβάνουν.

Με το να σας ζητάνε να μην κάνετε συναυλία στο Ισραήλ, οι Παλαιστίνιοι προσφεύγουν σε εσάς ζητώντας να βάλετε ένα μικρό λιθαράκι στην προσπάθεια να πιέσουν το Ισραήλ ώστε να σταματήσει την παραβίαση των θεμελιωδών δικαιωμάτων και του διεθνούς δικαίου. Σαφέστατα, αν μία κίνηση εναντίωσης στην πολιτική του διαχωρισμού, των διακρίσεων και του μίσους έχει κάποιο νόημα, σίγουρα σημαίνει την εναντίωση αυτής οπουδήποτε υπάρχει – συμπεριλαμβανομένης της Παλαιστίνης και των όσων συμβαίνουν εκεί κάθε μέρα. Διαφορετικά αυτό που μας μένει είναι να χρησιμοποιήσουμε τα δικά σας λόγια, «απλή ρητορική».

Μπορεί να νομίζετε πως το να εμφανιστείτε μαζί με τους Ισραηλινούς μουσικούς Dudu Tassa & the Kuwaitis, οι οποίοι παίζουν Εβραικό Αραβική μουσική, θα ισιώσει την κατάσταση. Δεν θα το κάνει, τόσο, όσο οι μικτές παραστάσεις στην Νότια Αφρική έφεραν πιο κοντά στον τερματισμό του καθεστώτος φυλετικών διαχωρισμών. Σας παρακαλούμε, κάντε ότι έκαναν οι καλλιτέχνες την εποχή της καταπίεσης στη  Νότια Αφρική: μείνετε μακριά, έως ότου όλα τελειώσουν.

Thurston Moore (musician):

‘If any concerned, humanitarian-conscious activists employ a boycott to protest brutal injustice in their country and request artists and scholars to refrain from working and/or being promoted as supportive of the normalization of that country – then I choose NOT to cross that line and suggest to all to not be complicit. It is a small sacrifice in respect to those who struggle in honourable opposition to state-sponsored fascism.’

Robert Wyatt (musician):

‘These international cultural events are of course great propaganda for this ruling regime’s desperately sophisticated image, fragrant camouflage for their relentlessly accelerating ethnic cleansing campaign in, for example, Jerusalem. Are you really comfortable with that?’

Ken Loach ( director of television):

‘I do hope Radiohead, and Thom Yorke in particular, realise the damage they will be doing to the Palestinians if they perform in Tel Aviv.  The Palestinians’ land is being stolen, they are being oppressed in every way, their daily lives made intolerable, many are imprisoned unlawfully in Israel, including shockingly, their children.  I’m afraid your pious words will mean nothing if you turn your backs on the Palestinians.  For their sake, and your own self-respect, please think again.’

Peter Kosminsky (writer, director and producer):

‘Some years ago, I had the great honour and privilege to work with the scarily talented Thom Yorke and Radiohead, when they allowed me to use their music for a film I was making about bullying.  I’ve admired from afar their support for the Tibetans and for Amnesty International, and their championing of human rights.  So I’m puzzled and really saddened to hear that they plan to play in Israel later this year.  I would urge them not to do so.  With Trump in the White House, the situation for Palestinians has become tougher than ever. They’ve asked for a cultural boycott of Israel, just as campaigners for freedom asked artists not to perform in Sun City during the apartheid era.  I think we should assume they know what’s in their best interests and respect their wish, irrespective of other considerations.’
